First off, the insulation for your battery cable can be either PolyVinyl Chloride ( PVC )
(Rated at only 85°C, and relatively soft ), or Cross-Linked PolyEthylene, ( XLPE ) ( rated at 125°C, and a lot tougher mechanically than PVC,
but slightly more expensive.)
Underhood temperatures can easily exceed 85°C, and a battery cable short circuit is extremely
dangerous. We only carry the XLPE. So by buying your cable from us, you are buying the better and safer insulation. Also, please note that welding cable,
a popular substitute, is rated only 65°C. While it is more flexible, the temperature rating just isn't there.
The wire gauge needed for your cable depends on A: The current drawn by the starter and B: The length of the cable
from the battery to the starter.
